What Is a Myers Cocktail IV?

The Myers Cocktail is an intravenous blend of vitamins and minerals given in a saline base. Ours is calcium and magnesium, vitamin B complex, vitamin B12 and vitamin C, run into a vein through a small catheter in the arm or the back of the hand while you sit still.
It is the original IV vitamin formula. Many of the blends on our own menu, and on most IV menus, are a variation on it with something added or something taken out. If you have read about IV vitamin therapy and want the one the whole category was built from rather than a themed blend, this is it.
The bag starts at 500ml, and you can have a full litre at no extra cost. The appointment runs 30 to 45 minutes from the nurse arriving to the nurse leaving, and a registered nurse stays with you for all of it. Same day appointments are usually available.
What a Myers Cocktail IV Does Not Do
A Myers Cocktail IV is a vitamin and mineral infusion. It is not a treatment for any disease or condition, and we will not describe it as one.
It contains no medication of any kind. No anti inflammatory, and nothing for nausea. If you are actively vomiting or cannot keep water down, this is the wrong drip and the nurse practitioner will say so. The Food Poisoning Fix IV at $249, or $125 for members, is 1000ml of saline with a mineral and electrolyte blend, B vitamins and ondansetron, an anti nausea medication. If you would rather book that one, say so and the nurse practitioner will review it on the same exam call.
It does not diagnose or correct a nutrient deficiency. We do not run labs and we do not read them. If you have a diagnosed deficiency you are managing with a physician, bring that up on the exam call so the nurse practitioner knows.
It is not a substitute for sleeping, eating or seeing a doctor about something that is bothering you.
The published clinical evidence is thinner than the popularity of the formula suggests. The best known trial is a small placebo controlled pilot study in fibromyalgia patients from 2009. Both the group that received the infusion and the group that received plain saline improved, and the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant. We would rather you read that here than find it somewhere else afterwards.
How a Myers Cocktail IV Appointment Works
1. Book.
Pick a time and tell us where you will be. Home, hotel, office or boat are all normal. Nothing is due at booking. Tell us anything relevant while you are there, including medical conditions, medications and allergies, and if you are in a building with a doorman or a gate, add the entry details so the nurse can reach you without calling up from the lobby. Same day appointments are usually available. Cancellations need 4 hours of notice, and groups of two or more need 8.
2. Your telehealth exam, once a calendar year.
Before your first drip of the year, a nurse practitioner reviews and approves it on a short telehealth call, about 5 minutes. You may see it called a good faith exam. It is the step that makes this a clinical service rather than a delivery, and it is the same call whichever drip you book. It happens at the start of your appointment. It is a separate $39 charge, once per calendar year rather than every time you book, and members do not pay it. If you have already had it this year, you skip this step.
3. Your appointment.
The nurse arrives with everything in a case. They check your blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation before anything is placed, go through your history with you, and answer whatever you want to ask. Then the line goes into a vein in your arm or the back of your hand, the Myers Cocktail IV runs, and the nurse stays with you for all of it rather than placing the line and leaving. The appointment runs 30 to 45 minutes from the nurse arriving to the nurse leaving. Most people take it on the sofa or in bed, reading or working. Every nurse carries an emergency kit: an epinephrine auto injector, a pulse oximeter, a blood pressure cuff and stethoscope, a charged phone and an anaphylaxis card.
4. Afterwards.
The nurse takes the line out, packs everything up and leaves with it. There is nothing to return and nothing to clean up. You pay after the appointment, and we accept HSA and FSA. Tips are never expected, and if you leave one it goes to your nurse.

Who Was Dr John Myers, and Where the Formula Came From
John Myers was a physician in Baltimore, Maryland. For roughly twenty five years, until his death in 1984, he treated patients with intravenous vitamin and mineral injections. He never published his formula. What he left behind was a practice, a set of patients and a recipe that existed mostly in the memories of the people who had been given it.
After he died, Dr Alan Gaby took on a number of those patients and reconstructed what Myers had been giving them. In 2002 Gaby published a written account of the formula in Alternative Medicine Review, and that paper is where the modern version and the name both come from. What clinics now sell as a Myers Cocktail is really Gaby's reconstruction of it, which is why you will sometimes see it called a modified Myers Cocktail.
That history is worth knowing for a practical reason. There is no single trademarked recipe and no governing body that certifies one. Two clinics can both sell a Myers Cocktail and put different things in the bag. Ours is listed in full below, and the nurse will show you every vial before anything goes in.
Myers Cocktail Ingredients: What Is Actually in the Bag
Saline base. Sterile salt water at roughly the same salt concentration as your blood. It carries everything else, and it is the largest part of the bag by volume. Starts at 500ml, and you can have a full litre at no extra cost.
Calcium and magnesium. Two minerals the body uses in muscle contraction, nerve signalling and a long list of enzyme reactions. They are given together because that is how Myers gave them. The nurse controls the rate the bag runs at and can slow it down at any point in the appointment; tell them if you would like it slower.
Vitamin B complex. The set of B vitamins the body uses to convert food into usable fuel, and in nerve and red blood cell function. Water soluble, so the body passes out what it does not use.
Vitamin B12. Listed separately on the menu in addition to the B complex. B12 is used in red blood cell formation and in nerve function, and it is one of the few vitamins the body stores.

That is the whole list. There is no NAD+, no glutathione, no biotin, no zinc, no amino blend and no iron in a Myers Cocktail IV. Glutathione, biotin, zinc and an amino blend can each be added as a $49 push, and members pay half price on add on pushes too. NAD+ and iron are not $49 add ons; NAD+ pushes and the Iron IV Infusion are priced separately on the menu.
Myers Cocktail IV Benefits: What People Book It For
This is the drip people choose when nothing in particular is wrong. It is the standing monthly appointment, the one booked before a long trip and again after it, the one booked during a heavy stretch at work, and the one most people start with when they are new to IV vitamin therapy, because it is the blend every other blend gets measured against.
What you are actually buying is four things. Fluid, straight into the bloodstream rather than through the gut. Two minerals the body uses constantly, in muscle contraction, nerve signalling and a long list of enzyme reactions. The B vitamins involved in turning food into fuel. And an antioxidant. Nobody, including us, can tell you from the outside whether you were low in any of them beforehand. The $39 Exam, Explained Plainly

They ask what you take, what you are allergic to, whether you have kidney or heart conditions, whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and what you are booking the drip for. Then they approve the order. You may see this called a good faith exam.
It is $39. It is a separate charge and it is not part of the $319, so it is not included in the drip price. It is charged at or after your appointment, never at booking. It is once per calendar year, not once ever and not once per drip, so every other Myers Cocktail infusion you book that year needs nothing further.
Members do not pay it at all.
Magnesium is cleared by the kidneys, so reduced kidney function is one of the things that comes up on that call. So is a heart condition, and so is any medication you are taking. If you have something to declare, that call is where you declare it. If the nurse practitioner does not approve the drip, you are not charged for a drip you did not have.
